THE ACTOR'S JOURNEY® - About - More Information
More Information ...
People become actors because of a need or desire to act. At the “amateur” level this motivation is pure and uncomplicated. However, acting at the “professional” level in the motion picture, television and theatrical stage industries requires a completely different mindset, motivation and skills.
Working as a professional “actor” is one of the most misunderstood vocations in the world. Let it be known - that unless an actor is in class training, rehearsing a scene with another actor – or hired to perform a role on camera or up on stage – he or she spends very little time actually “acting”! The truth is – “acting” – at the profession level - has very little to do with acting and everything to do with “Business”. Hence the name: “Show Business”. Perhaps a better name would have been “show BUSINESS”! The very idea that an art form can also be a business is a concept that seems lost on almost all performers. Actors who are perceptive soon figure out that the only way to pry open the door to the industry is by attempting to quickly learn and master the mercurial “Business” aspects of the industry. Practicing these industry specific skills and processes on a daily basis is the only way to gain career-propelling momentum, open doors to auditions and eventually find meaningful work.
The realization that actors need to turn their focus on the Business aspects of their career (and subordinate the performance aspects) leads actors to the next conundrum: The “Business” information that actors are desperately seeking is nowhere to be found. Colleges, Universities and private schools teach actors the Art and Craft of Acting. They do not teach actors how to break into the industry and secure work. Most actors are forced to jump into the murky waters of Show Business and attempt to learn the Business Skills they need to succeed by trial-and-error. This process is both time consuming and frustrating. Most actors – even those that are highly skilled and/or talented – burn out – or, figuratively speaking, drown long before they learn to swim. This inability to easily access required Business information and knowledge is why so many talented actors never make the cut – and just fade away.
The inability to easily access specific industry information is what prompted a select group of experienced industry professionals to step up to the plate and end this perpetual “informational” blackout.
Training in the art and craft of acting is fun and easy. Finding that professional level
information and guidance to take your developed talent and turn it into a viable acting
career isn’t. Ask any professional actor – “talent” counts for very little. The only thing
that ultimately matters for actors is an understanding and mastery of the essential
“Business” - or non-performance – skills related to securing work in the industry.
